It’s happening. Nourishment To Go is here!
I don’t mean to alarm anyone, but in 3 days time it’s going to be March. Does anyone else feel like a black hole just sucked the last couple of months into an inescapable spacetime chasm? Anyway, it’s time for a story.
About a year ago, Ryan and I were lying on the floor upstairs in the PT studio in full business meeting mode when I excitedly opened my laptop to one of the 19 tabs open and declared “Dude…we’re gonna do THIS!”
It was the website of an awesome wholefood meal delivery service on the Central Coast.
The silence was deafening. I misinterpreted this as awe at my brilliance. After continuing to remain speechless for awhile, he then simply said “Marce, that’s a WHOLE other business”.
I said nooo…and he said yesss…and we went on like that for a few rounds until, for more impact, he said “We would need to quit our jobs here at Natural Edge, and walk out the door right now to start this business”
It turns out he was right and I was wrong. It WAS a whole other business…but we’ve done it anyway (and no one quit their jobs).
In just 6 days time, Nourishment To Go will be live on our website and the people of Broome will be able to order chef-prepared wholefood meals, made to order and delivered fresh!
And yep, I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t nervous. You know how you wake up in the morning and you’re just a normal person, doing normal things, navigating your way through life as best you can? Well that’s me too. I catch myself thinking ‘I can’t do this’ and ‘who do I think I am?’…just like everyone else. The self talk is loud sometimes.
So maybe I’m just stubborn as hell, but I believe in this. Food is medicine. Food has more to do with your health & longevity than any other pillar of wellness. You can train regularly, sleep well, keep your stress low, get outside in nature lots, meditate, and stay connected with real relationships, but if you’re filling your body with crap food you’re screwed. That’s not to say those other things aren’t important – they really are. But nutrition is the foundation of everything.
Backing up a little in the story, the idea of somehow incorporating ‘real food’ into our business started many years ago. Nutrition has been a huge part of Natural Edge from the very beginning – I held seminars and ran nutrition ‘challenges’ – it was kinda my thing – but the advice we were giving was pretty unconventional at the time as far as mainstream health messages go.
I remember my first seminar in 2012, it was as if I was speaking another language. There was a room full of blank stares when I suggested that eating cereal for breakfast may not be the best way forward, or that almost every food we’ve been told was healthy was in fact best avoided.
I can even recall us being the butt of sing-songy “Is that Paleo?” jokes across town (it seemed to go hand in hand with the “CrossFit’s a cult” thing) and I just thought Wow! Come back to me in a few years when you’ve caught up.
These days its old news (thank god) and if you’re not promoting a real food diet you’re out of touch and quite honestly don’t deserve to be working in the industry.
As we all know, the wellness of our population as a whole is at an all-time low. Disease, obesity, Diabetes type 2, auto-immune conditions, thyroid disorders, gut problems, metabolic derangement, insulin resistance, IBS, Crohn’s, Coeliac disease, Alzheimer’s, mental health problems, reproductive problems…the list goes on.
The unfortunate truth is that all these things can be directly associated in some way with the food we eat in this modern, processed, hyper-palatable world dominated by ‘Frankenfoods’.
So many of these conditions and states of dis-ease can be dramatically improved, if not eliminated, by eating foods that will nourish our bodies, reduce inflammation, cause less gut irritation, counter nutrient deficiencies and actually help us thrive. As a population we can look, feel and perform so much better than we do!
Matt and I had discussed having a ‘Meal of the Day’ for our members quite early on, just like we had a ‘Workout of the Day’ – it was actually his idea. We had both experienced our own health turning around from living the nutrition principles we preached, so it was always going to be as much a part of Natural Edge’s holistic approach to health and fitness as possible.
We’d toyed with the idea of me literally cooking something myself at home and bringing it in. Thank god we still had enough sanity then to realise that wouldn’t be sustainable! We also realised we would need to meet certain legislation as far as commercial kitchens go.
The idea got shelved for years…but was always lurking. Then just over a year ago I was casually bantering away to one of my massage clients about business ideas, dreams and the like and then BAM, suddenly there was a commercial kitchen space at our disposal. Cue extremely fast and excited banter. The meal of the day concept for our members was back in the game!
I won’t bore you with the details of how I went from a few in-house ‘meals of the day’ for our members, to Nourishment To Go, a healthy meal delivery service for the entire town…but here we are. This is happening!
So amongst rebranding our gym to better reflect who we are and what we do, continuing my massage therapy practice, fielding a growing nutrition coaching service, and trying to be a good Mum and partner (I often fail), I’ve spent the best part of a year now building this dream.
There have been more curve balls, dead ends, rabbit holes, and moments where I thought it wouldn’t/shouldn’t/couldn’t happen than I care to remember, and I’m not afraid to admit it has been 10 times harder than I ever thought it would be.
All said and done, I could not be prouder of what we’ve created and even if it fails, it has been an experience I’ll never regret for the lessons I have learned along the way.
I definitely couldn’t have done it without my right hand man Ryan who continues to take on every annoying task I give him, the Moltoni’s & Chef Pete for their catering company and kitchen skills, the very talented web design & development team at Tomas & Co, or the support of Matt, my partner in crime who has had way less of my time than any husband-to-be deserves while I’ve developed this thing – simply because he believes in me and what I believe in.
So from Monday 4th March 2019, you’ll no longer see a red ‘Coming Soon’ banner over the Nourishment To Go image, and you’ll no longer get redirected to a ‘Contact Us’ form when you click on it. Instead you’ll be find yourself in a pretty online store where the convenience of clean wholefood meals is literally at your fingertips.
You’ll probably have lots of questions. And we’ve taken care of that too in the comprehensive FAQ page you’ll find. You’ll be able to see every single ingredient in every single meal because we have nothing to hide and y’know…just eat real food!
There’ll be a countdown clock on the weekly menu so you don’t miss out on placing your order before each weekly cutoff. The delivery fee is flat rate so you can order as much as you like at no additional charge.
And we will deliver your delicious meals with a smile to your home or work every Monday morning. It’s that simple.
